If all it took to be considered a serious rocker was some clever posturing, The Whores would already be playing to packed arenas around the world. Unfortunately for Tommy Cherry (vocals) and Stewart Xmas (guitar, vocals, synth), that isn't the case and this duo from Glasgow remains unsigned. The group, which has been around since 2000 recorded several songs in 2002 that led to state that "we migh have accidentally recorded the greatest debut album of all time!" In an attempt to get signed, the four-song Rock Til Ya Die demo was released.
Attempting to create a greater context for their music, the band pits rock & roll Utopians against the cynics predicting rock & roll oblivian and asserts that their songs "are essential listening for anybody who isn't yet ready for a rock and roll suicide." Where do The Whores fall within this epic battle of Utopia versus Oblivion? Will they be able to turn around the dissipative structure of rock and roll? Let's listen and find out.
It immediately becomes clear that the war on Oblivian will not be ended by a larger-than-life aggressive apocalyptic sound with the strength of Godzilla forcing you to "Rock Til Ya Die", but with the implementation of a lot of fuzzy guitars and a lot synth and a lot of futuristic battle sounds on some tracks, well futuristic for people 30-50 years ago—okay, maybe this is more like Godzilla then I thought.
As far as success with stomping the buildings that hold cynics, however, The Whores destroy about 50 percent of Tokyo. Opening track, "The Past Sucks" and closer "Ghosts of the Future" display a lot of potential despite bookending two subpar songs in the form of "Rock Til Ya Die" and "Ready Girls?". While the battle may not be won at the moment, it's possible that some better production could salvage "Rock Til Ya Die" which is plagued by a somewhat annoying muffled sound. The Whores are going to have to pray a little harder to their god "Pop" and goddess "Rock" if they want to come out of the battle alive.
