Split EP
One Percent Press

The first record release from Savannah, Georgia based One Percent Press, better known for its comic and zine releases, this split EP from Atlanta’s What We Do Is Secret and Athens’s Venice Is Sinking is a strong debut release.

Opening with the energetic "Esther C", one of three tracks from Venice Is Sinking, a hazy air is established that continues throughout the rest of the EP carrying with it a wealth of possibilities and exploration. On "Pulaski Heights", which may easily be the standout track from Venice Is Sinking, the group blends together to create what may be one of the most warm and inviting tracks I can recall. Lucas Jensen (drums) and Stephen Miller (bass) delicately ease the music forward at a steady pace while Daniel Lawson (vocals, guitar), Karolyn Troupe (vocals, viola), and Alex Thibadoux (organ, piano) gracefully work together to create an enveloping layer of sound.

While Venice Is Sinking presents what may be the musical representation of a warm summer afternoon, What We Do Is Secret has a noticeably colder and more distant feel; the tracks carry an air you’d expect more from a group in Boston than in the South. I was immediately drawn in by the voice of Chelsea Johnson which, with its slight waver and subdued level in the mix, I had mistaken as being somewhat fragile. Johnson’s narratives describing the imagined murders of ex-lovers paired with the steady, deliberate rhythmic playing of Sean Hussey (bass) and Cameron McLane (drums) as well as the swelling guitars of David Knowles and Stephen Floyd make "Like Crashing Jets All Around Me" and "Better Than Revenge" compelling listens.

With both bands slated to release full-lengths later this year, One Percent Press is building its catalog with two very talented groups.
