With an album titled Photo Album of Complex Relationships, it may not come as much of a surprise that "EMO" makes frequent appearances under "Genre" on Barbara Trentalange's press sheet and MySpace page. What is more likely to surprise you is the moody atmospherics of the album's twelve tracks.
A rundown of Trentalange's credits provide considerable insight into the variety of sounds present on Photo Album of Complex Relationships. Included among the eleven instruments listed next to her name are flute, theramin, and wine glasses. This diverse instrumentation is a crucial element contributing to the dramatic depth of each song. On "Rabbit" the swell of the strings creates an uneasy tension that could easily have listeners on the edge of their seats.
Trentalange's vocals are strong throughout the album, but at times sound a bit processed. On opening track "Boxer's Wife" they have a distorted edge which I was prepared to dismiss as something wholly unnecessary until I heard them used in segments of "Monster"; this, paired with the rich cello lines on the song proved to be a particularly effective combination much like the various elemental mixtures presented on the rest of the album.
