While the idea of a band having one primary songwriter for an album is of course nothing new, Memphis's Snowglobe is taking a bit of twist on the idea of having a primary songwriter. Following the release of their two previous albums, Our Land Brains and Doing the Distance, found itself in a situation which would have led many to simply call it quits. For Snowglobe, however, this has led to the release of Oxytocin, the first of an anticipated five releases, each directed by a different member of the band.
Directed by Brad Postlethwaite, Oxytocin features a variety of rich instrumentation but at the same time is able to maintain a bit of simple pop charm. The tracks "Dry" and "Happy" draw you in with their light, bouncy feel, but are actually somewhat of an anomaly. The majority of tracks are more moderately paced and maintain a somewhat darker, or simply less cheery feel. This doesn't make them any less appealing though; Postlethwaite's songwriting is strong enough to appeal no matter what the overall mood of the song is.
