With their new full-length, If You Can, slated to be released in June, The Race give us a preview of what lies ahead with this four song EP. Rose was recorded in the same session as the album and is the first release to feature the expanded lineup with Jeremy Parker on bass.
Produced and recorded by electronic duo Telefon Tel Aviv in their studio, Rose is a clear evolution in sound for The Race. The dreamy atmosphere created by the band are now more completely the result of the compositions and less the consequence of a somewhat muted sound. Notes on the EP are crisp, full, and maintain a light air to them that is likely to prove more palatable to a larger audience. The mix between Kevin Duneman's live and programmed drumming perfectly balances with the greater atmospheric elements created by Steve Art's new responsibilities on keyboard. The greatest enhancement to The Race's sound, however, may be the vocals of Craig Klein. On Rose Klein's voice is a full and confident focal point no longer wavering as it occasionally did on The Perfect Gift. If the quality of the tracks on Rose are a true indicator of the sounds to be expected on If You Can, then there is no doubt that The Race can expect a very hearty endorsement of their future release.
