Slapped on the cover of this promotional release (and in the slobbering description on the record company website) are words like "shoegaze" and band names like Spiritualized and Spacemen 3, not to mention the names of uber-producers Phil Spector and Joe Meek. Let's look at this point by point.
Yes, the group does use a litany of pedals that wash out the sound of their guitars like famous shoegazer bands, but to what end? They sound like they are making noise just to make noise, just to be lumped in with every other band that wants to be the next Ride or My Bloody Valentine rather than attempting anything original.
As well, there is a track on here that is a blatant attempt at rewriting a Spacemen 3 song ("50s"). Yet, this track doesn't come anywhere close to the drugged-out bliss that Sonic, Jason, and Pete cooked up, but sounds as flat and dull as a Snow Patrol demo.
Finally, anyone who knows even the slightest bit of Phil Spector or Joe Meek's work would know that it sounds NOTHING like the lo-fi drudgery on this disc, nor do I think they would have gone near this band when they were in their respective heydays.
As you can tell, my frustration level with the way that PR people, bands, and record companies are performing and portraying music in this day and age has reached it's boiling point. I beg you all to start thinking a little more creatively and don't just do what you think will sell more copies of your records. You're only hurting yourselves.
