A listen to Chrome could easily lead to one thinking that Portland's Nice Nice consists of a pair of talented producers capable of cutting and pasting sounds on Pro Tools to create a unique collage of sound unlike much else heard anywhere else. Yes, assumptions are easy to come by when it listening to an album for the first time, but you know the saying, "HOLY FUCK ALL THIS SHIT IS PLAYED LIVE!" That's right, Mark Shirazi — drums, drum pads, trash can, pots & pans, and toys — and Jason Buehler — guitar, pedals, radio, megaphone, and misc. percussion — manage to do this all live.
Tracks on the album range from the more minimalist and ambient ("See-Thru Plastic", "Joinus") to the incredibly dense Lightning Bolt-esque ("Chez Clix", "Tiny Steps"), but all are tied together in that they are all composed with a sense of improvisational experimentation and a larger focus on sound and rhythm than melody. This focus has left many declaring Nice Nice to simply be purveyors of noise. Noise or not Shirazi and Buehler are daring enough to tread on ground rarely covered with success and if people could dismiss the idea that a good song is something that can easily be sung along to Chrome may get the respect it deserves. But even if people can't dismiss that idea, remember the saying, "HOLY FUCK ALL THIS SHIT IS PLAYED LIVE!"
