Estrus Records

If all the members of The Midnight Evils looked like bassist Curan Folsom it'd be hard to blame someone for assuming they might be the latest Southern rock band to form in the trailer. Maybe it is with this in mind that the Minnesotan quartet (singer Jonny Evans left the band shortly before the release of this album) include shouts of "play some Skynyrd" and "Freebird" during the lengthy guitar solo intro to "Bad Machine", the opening track to Straight 'Til Morning.

The band's debut on Bellingham, WA's Estrus Records fits right in with the label's catalog that includes releases from The Mooney Suzuki, Fatal Flying Guilloteens, The Immortal Lee County Killers, and a whole slew of other garage rock bands. The Midnight Evils keep it rough and dirty throughout the album with the frantic drumming of Jesse Tomlinson, swaggering vocals of Jonny Evans, high-speed guitar licks of Steve Cooper and Brian Vanderwerf, and punchy bass of Curan Folsom.

For the most part the group could easily get lost in the large pot of garage bands out there today, but the highlights of the album — "Twin City Lights", a tribute to Aussie 70s band Radio Birdman being the most notable — will keep Straight 'Til Morning at the top of the pack.
