When one thinks of a "one-man band," an image of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins may come to mind. Now take that image and throw it out the window because Matt McGuire, aka Man, represents the one man band of our times. Dressed in a suit, Man is armed with a loud, fuzzed out bass, a huge ass kick drum, and a shitload of anger and frustration expressed in songs such as "Fuck the Team," "Go Fuck Yourself," and "Fired."
After a listen to "Hippie Down," one can guess why McGuire decided to return to his hometown of Detroit after living in "Hippie-land" (Colorado) and really, the hippies should be happy that he’s decided to take out his frustration in this form to prevent further instances of "one punch, hippie down!" While pouring out his gospel in a rant form similar to that exhibited by Suicidal Tendencies’ vocalist Mike Muir on their classic track "Institutionalized," Man pounds out the beat on his kick drum exhibiting the fact that he has nearly as much drumming talent in one foot as fellow Detroit drummer Meg White has in her entire body.
Machine may not be an album for all occasions, but if you happen to be frustrated about something, whether it is cliques, work, or hippies, it’s time to listen to Man. These songs are anthems to be shouted along to while shaking your fist in the air.
