King Radio's Are You the Sick Passenger? is a trip back in time. Inspired by the lush orchestral pop created by those before him, Frank Padellaro — the sole permanent member of King Radio — and producer Peter Baldwin headed into the studio ready to utilize vintage instruments and equipment. Joined by a host of musicians, Padellaro creates a soft, rich atmosphere reminiscent of the simple, yet sophisticated pop music from the past.
Are You the Sick Passenger?'s opening "Introduction" track eases the listener into its full instrumentation building layer upon layer. This four and a half minute track may not act as the best indicator of things to come, however. While the rest of the album's mellow sound could be likened to the feeling one gets after spending some joyful time on a sun-drenched beach, "Introduction" seems more like a rainy day. "Caveat Emptor", the following track, corrects the course of the album with its bouncing bass and keyboard, as well as light vocals, that will have most people thinking Beatles in no time.
