Although their debut ep. was recorded as a trio (Amanda Von Loon – piano/vocals; James – bass; Yishai Arcadio – drums/guitar), a quick view of Harlequin Jones' MySpace page will reveal that James has left the group leaving them to be a piano/drum duo. This instrumentation paired with the group's somewhat darker tones make Dresden Dolls comparisons likely and 60-75% of ep. definitely supports this comparison with "Gutter Tango" being my pick as the most impressive song written in this vein.
Two tracks that strike me as not quite like the others are opener "Hope Your Rotting" and "Lord Only Knows". The first, while consisting of the piano/drum pairing, has what I can only describe as a sort of pulsating rhythm — the piano and especially the loose snare drum effectively accent a more syncopated rhythm that drives the song forward in a distinct manner. "Lord Only Knows" – my favorite track from the disc – is like nothing else on the disc. It features minimal, metallic percussion, a dirty, bluesy guitar line, and what I'm guessing are overdubbed vocal harmonies. Von Loon's vocals are rich, powerful, and intoxicating on the track and are a highlight throughout the rest of the album as well.
