Mysterious and amazing things can happen in the night when most of us are sleeping. During the past year, Greater California has spent their time recording in a dimly lit setting between midnight and 5am. Conceptualized around the acquisition of a Wurlitzer electric piano, the appropriately titled Somber Wurlitzer hangs a dense fog around the listener that is captivating and impossible to escape.

The ten tracks are filled with a heavy dose of 60s psych-pop aided by vocal harmonies, light melodies, and of course the omnipresent Wurlitzer. Occasionally paired with sounds akin to the southwestern desert (both “Missing Summer” and “Portuguese Hall” feature trumpet solos that offer a Calexico-esque flavor), Greater California exploit the instrument’s hypnotic tones to create a consistent mood throughout Somber Wurlitzer.
