While the primary topics of Free Diamonds's album There Should Be More Dancing, parties and love, won’t gain the New Castle, England group any originality points, the trio manages to create something undeniably their own. Added to the Deep Elm roster following the inclusion of their track "Blind Boys" on This Is Indie Rock Vol. 3, the track, which also appears on this full-length, is exemplary of what lies on the rest of the album.
Perhaps most unique is the vocal style of Scott Anderson and Paul Cosgrove. Far from traditional, it seems as though the sound is being tensely squeezed out of their throats. For many that may result in an assumption that it is awful, but in the case of Free Diamonds it is remarkably effective, projecting a nervous air that pairs well with the frantic nature of the music. The somewhat spastic feel of the tracks are likely to lean most in the direction of more dancing, something that I’m sure the band would be happy to see.
Although the energy is what captured me initially, there are certainly some lyrical concepts that had me smiling as well. These include those on "Modern Day Pirates" that associates certain aspects of relationships with mutiny as well as the line from "Land of Giants":
I love somebody who loves somebody who loves somebody much taller than me.Of course that may just be because I'm below average height, but it does display the somewhat lighthearted way that Free Diamonds recount their relationship woes — all the better considering the amount danceable energy produced throughout There Should Be More Dancing's 30 minutes since nobody wants to dance depressed.
