On Free the Ethan Daniel Davidson Five, Davidson teams up with a core group of four others as well as an additional ten throughout the album to continue his blend of politically-charged songwriting. As was the case on Better Living Through Creative Selling, Davidson presents his ideas through a diverse array of styles.
With more than double the tracks and nearly double the album length, Free the Ethan Daniel Davidson Five allows even more of Davidson's stories and aspects of his personality to reveal themselves. "I Can't Drink You Pretty" is Davidson's equal opportunity take on a common humorous theme. The song features Gretchen Gonzales presenting the women's take as she sings, "I can't drink you wealthy, handsome, or well hung". Also included on the album is the blues version of "Drive-By Diplomacy" which is similar to the version found on Better Living Through Creative Selling except with a bit more electric guitar flavor and soloing. The most notably amped up of all the tracks on the album is the cover of John Prine's "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore" with its heavily distorted guitar and overall more aggressive feel. With Free the Ethan Daniel Davidson Five Davidson continues to create music for those that want their singer/songwriters to have some more musical attitude.
