Back in junior high, I had a science teacher that would occasionally hold what he called "Bad Movie Theater" during lunch. Any B-movie could qualify for play during these bi-weekly viewings, but the films that this particular educator held closest to his heart were those involving Godzilla and something tells me that Daikaiju, with songs including "The Trouble with Those Mothra Girls" and "Farewell to Monster Island", hold the same fondness for the Tokyo terrorizing beast.

So what does a band paying homage to Godzilla sound like? Well coincidentally, this also relates to a hobby of that junior high science teacher, surfing. That’s right, the sound of Godzilla and other large monsters is psychedelic surf rock. Like the films, Daikaiju’s instrumental music provides a setting that just isn’t quite right and seems a tiny bit cheesy when viewed out of context. Band members Secret Asian Man, Dymaxion Lee, Brain Conflict, and Mr. Nein play their hearts out, however, and by going all out with the band’s theme create something quite entertaining albeit a bit gimmicky. Ultimately, your feelings toward those classic Japanese films will play a larger role in your attitude towards the band than your taste in music.
