In 2002, prior to the release of We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers and the hit-and-run killing of their bass player Chris Saathoff, Chicago's Chin Up Chin UP recorded and released a self-titled EP. Now, three years later, the EP is being re-released on Flameshovel Records expanded with two remixes, an alternate acoustic version, and a music video from We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers.
Opening up the album is "Collide the Tide" which was also included on Skyscrapers. Like most tracks from the original EP, this version of "Collide the Tide" lacks the crisp production of Skyscrapers, but still manages to evoke the same sensation of exploring a vast, cold landscape that make listening to Chin Up Chin Up such an involving interaction.
While both Stephen Snydacker's remix of "We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers" and the acoustic "Falconz and Vulcanz" are relatively virtuous to their original versions, the Ronald Simmons/Gene McDonald mix of "The Architect Has a Gun" exaggerates the frigid ambiance of the original beyond recognition by stripping down the arrangement and altering the vocals in a way that completely removes any human element from the track. It proves to be a rather challenging listen and somewhat weak closer for an otherwise strong collection of songs.
