Over two years in the making, fans of Character's first release A Flashing of Knives and Green Water have had to wait since 2001 for the follow-up, We Also Create False Promises on Fictitious Records. Produced by label co-owner Roger Moutenot, who has also engineered or produced albums for Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney, and Lou Reed, one listen to We Also Create False Promises should have most fans realizing that the album was worth the wait.
Throughout the album's eleven instrumental tracks, Character moves freely between a dreamy, somewhat sci-fi realm and an area of sound that more clearly reveals a definite jazz influence by actively involving all six band members. The performances captured on We Also Create False Promises displays the band's ability to smoothly transition and subtly transfer instrumental focus amongst themselves. Combine that with the tempo and stylistic transformations between tracks and you have an instrumental album with songs that act as distinct entities and don't meld into one long session of background music.
