These guys have a good line in jagged, Clash-esque guitars mixed with the odd bit of synth, and the do nice vocal harmonies without being overly pretty and polished — there's enough rock 'n' roll edge to keep it from sliding into fashion-pose metronome rock. And they know how to write a good hook without becoming enslaved by it. Those hooks and synthesizers sometimes contrive to strobe in and out in a way that makes it seem like someone's spliced in a couple bars from a Cars song, as on the second track, "New Mistake." "Mumbles," a relatively straightforward piece of popish guitar music, is the outstanding track of the five on this e.p. Bridges and Powerlines is a decent collection of songs, although it's not particularly anything we haven't heard before — it's not so many miles removed from Bloc Party. But Bloc Party are pretty good, and so are Bridges and Powerlines.
