Once again Detroit's Time Beach Records shows the world that the motor city can be about more than just rock with Million Year Old Sand, Audra Kubat's third solo album. While Kubat's solo efforts have been firmly rooted in folk, she certainly has not been one to dismiss Detroit's rock reputation having worked with producers for The Detroit Cobras and The Gories. On this album, Kubat teams up with fellow Times Beach band Gold Cash Gold's Eric Hoegemeyer.
The arrangements on Million Year Old Sand are open and airy giving Kubat's guitar and vocals plenty of room with which to work. Throughout the album Kubat's voice maintains a light and fragile giving a sense of deep sincerity as she lays her soul bare. On select tracks light percussion and keyboards are present, subtly filling out the sound ensuring that they never distract from the vocals. Only on the closing "Outro" does this pattern change as Kubat's voice cautiously treads over a drone with the assistance of heavy reverb. The track seems out of place on an album filled with more conventional folk arrangements and would seem more appropriate for a new age meditative album, but some may be thankful that it at least offers something a little different.
