Artists in Portland really know how to put together their packaging. While not quite on the scale of Menomena’s flipbook art for I Am The Fun Blame Monster, Andi Camp puts a lot of work into her album’s packaging. Handmade and numbered, the black, pink, and gray artwork held shut with a magnetic clasp is simple, yet compelling much like the eight tracks on Magnetic.
Featuring only vocals, piano, and drums, Magnetic opens the title track and bit more energy than one may expect from a piano-led duo. Camp’s vocals are breathy and engaging but when compared to the instrumental energy present – especially the drumming of Ryan Heise – they come off as a bit too reserved. This isn’t to say that Camp lacks emotion in her voice, in fact a listen to "Billy" or "Rockstar" would prove quite the contrary.
"Moonshiner", the only track on Magnetic to stray from the piano/drums/vocals arrangement, features a duet between Camp and Anderson Rice who also plays guitar on the track. The song provides a nice contrast from the rest of the album and with its more traditional arrangement demonstrates what a pleasant change of pace Andi Camp provides from most music being made today.
