John Vanderslice Kicks It Iraq-Style

John Vanderslice, still holding the title of “Nicest Guy in Indie Rock”, is pissed at the government.

And to celebrate he’s releasing Emerald City on July 24, 2007. The title refers to “The Green Zone” in Baghdad and was written during his ongoing battle with US immigration over getting his girlfriend, a French national, a visa.

JV was backed by his recent touring lineup of David Broecker, Dave Douglas, Ian Bjornstad, and Scott Solter and was recorded mostly at his own Tiny Telephone studio.

Emerald City Tracklisting:
01. Kookaburra
02. Time to Go
03. The Parade
04. White Dove
05. Tablespoon of Codeine
06. The Tower
07. The Minaret
08. Numbered Lithograph
09. Central Booking

New Page France Now Available For Your Enjoyment

And the Family Telephone CoverI’m getting ready to head out on a trip for the next few days and as is always necessary before such a journey, I’m loading up on music. Fortunately, my journey begins just late enough in the month for me to pick up the new album from Page France. Ever since being introduced to the Baltimore band via Suicide Squeeze‘s reissue of their album Hello, Dear Wind, the band has captured a serious place in my heart and I’m looking forward to fully digesting the new album, …And the Family Telephone on the plane, at the airport, and everywhere else I happen to have the chance to give it a listen.

Based on my initial listen, I’ve noticed that several of the tracks seem to have more of a sort of—and I’m not sure if this is the best way to describe it—folk-y/roots-y shuffle to them, primarily through the middle of the album. The light vocals that really drew me in on Hello, Dear Wind, are still present on …And the Family Telephone and seem to be featured more towards the end of the album, which is also where some of my favorite tracks so far are located. These favorites include: “Hat and Rabbit”, “Here’s a Telephone”, and “Beggar’s Table Legs”.

AOL is streaming the album in its entirety, but at least when I tried to open the stream, it seemed like there were several plug-ins necessary so I just got the album via eMusic. You can also check out some tracks at the Page France MySpace page.

Page France is slated to being a co-headlining tour with Bishop Allen this summer, but until then, only folks in the following cities are lucky:

05/18: Brooklyn, NY @ Union Hall w/ Fields
05/19: New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge w/ Fields
05/20: Boston, MA @ T.T. the Bear’s
06/14: Washington DC @ The Rock and Roll Hotel
06/28: Bushnell, IL @ Cornerstone Festival w/ Starflyer 59
06/29: Chicago, IL @ Beat Kitchen w/ Starflyer 59
06/30: Minneapolis, MN @ 7th Street Entry w/ Starflyer 59
